One of the many amazing qualities of the human body is its ability to heal and self-repair. Unfortunately, orthotic devices and prosthetic limbs are mechanical and as such, sometimes require maintenance or repair, and can even wear out completely. It can be very unsettling to suddenly have to give up your orthosis or prosthesis so it can be repaired. That’s one of the reasons we encourage people to visit their practitioner at least once every 12 to 18 months. Potential problems can often be detected and then corrected before the device actually breaks or becomes unusable. Preventative appointments give you a chance to learn about new technology and upgrades; you can also address any concerns you may have regarding your device or your mobility. Your practitioner will be able to evaluate if you are using the device properly or if you have developed any habits that might be causing extra wear.
Even with the best preventative care, breakdowns can occur. If that should happen, call your practitioner right away and schedule an office visit. They will know about the warranties on all components and how to get replacement parts quickly.
