Hanger Receives Global Health Care Leadership Award

Austin, Texas, March 7, 2012 – Hanger Orthopedic Group, Ivan R. Sabel and the Hanger Ivan R. Sabel Foundation have been named the inaugural recipients of Catholic Medical Mission Board’s (CMMB) Global Health Care Leadership Award in honor of Hanger’s 150th Anniversary and its outstanding humanitarian efforts in Haiti. The award was presented to Thomas F. Kirk, Hanger CEO, and Ivan R. Sabel, Chairman of the Hanger Ivan R. Sabel Foundation, at a gala dinner culminating Hanger’s Annual Education Fair and National Meeting in Las Vegas on Friday, February 3rd.

Established this year, on the occasion of CMMB’s100th Anniversary, the award honors individuals and organizations with whom CMMB has close working partnerships that have made a significant impact in the world of global health. In presenting the award, CMMB’s Senior Vice President of Programs, Jeffrey Jordan, noted the similarity between the two organizations: “Like Hanger, CMMB was created from personal tragedy. Our founder, in 1912, suffered both the loss of a newborn child from asphyxiation, and the death of his wife. He went on to invent a device that prevents neonatal asphyxiation . . . and to found CMMB. James Edward Hanger was the first amputee of the Civil War. He turned his personal tragedy into an individual service to mankind.”

“We are honored to receive this award from such a well-respected, far-reaching charitable organization like CMMB,” said Ivan R. Sabel, Chairman of the Hanger Ivan R. Sabel Foundation. “An invaluable partner within the Haitian Amputee Coalition, CMMB has been instrumental to the success of the Klinik Hanger in Deschapelles. We look forward to continuing our joint efforts to meet the prosthetic needs of those in Haiti.”

Hanger and CMMB have worked closely together, as members of the Haitian Amputee Coalition, which was established by Hanger Orthopedic Group in the wake of the Haiti earthquake in 2010. The Coalition created a long-term prosthetic and rehabilitation center on-site at the Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti, approximately 60 miles from Port-au-Prince. To date, more than 1,200 amputees have received prosthetic care at Klinik Hanger in Haiti. The Coalition also has provided psychosocial support, transportation and physical therapy. Continuing resources are being provided to focus on long-term sustainability and integration of services into existing local organizations.
