Somersworth, N.H., October 19, 2012 – New England resident and Hanger Clinic patient Connie Nason was the first in New Hampshire and one of the first in New England to be fit with the élan, a new microprocessor-controlled prosthetic foot. Several New England-based media outlets recently interviewed Nason and her Hanger Clinic prosthetist Paul Jenkins to learn more about the new technology:

When she was just 34-years-old, complications from Berger’s Disease resulted in the amputation of Nason’s right leg below-the-knee; however, today, she is thriving with the new bionic technology. Since being fit with the élan microprocessor-controlled foot this spring, Nason says she is able to walk quicker with increased confidence, and the new device gives her a sense of security and stability to navigate inclines and declines – all of which has significantly increased her activity level. Nason finds the élan helps her navigate various types of terrain without having to think about her next step, and she has even given up her cane which she has depended on for the past 15 years. Nason finds most things much easier now, from the everyday tasks such as grocery shopping, to walking outdoors with her cat. She also enjoys the small things, such as the ability to sit with both feet planted on the ground.
About the élan – The élan uses patented microprocessor-controlled technology that provides real time, simultaneous adjustments as the user walks. For example, it includes an assist feature that makes it easier for users like Nason to walk up inclines, and a brake feature that makes it easier for the user to walk down declines. The foot also allows users to walk with ease and confidence on a variety of uneven surfaces (i.e. downhill, over a rocky path), and while changing speeds.
