Shane Coldwell
Born without legs from the knees down, Shane Coldwell has experienced the dramatic improvements in prosthetic technology since he began wearing artificial legs at age three. “As a child I found that the basic prosthetic legs I wore limited my activities like biking, running and other sports. I found that wheelchair sports would give me the mobility that I missed by not having real legs,” said Shane.
Recently fit with the Hanger Complete System, made up of the patented ComfortFlex socket system and a computerized knee, Shane is doing things he never thought possible.
“I can’t believe how great these new legs are. I am doing things now that I never dreamed I could do. I can walk down stairs, down hills and even drive a car without any modifications.”
Shane’s dream of running came true with a second pair of prostheses that utilize a hydraulic knee and a special carbon fiber running foot. “It was the most awesome feeling to actually be able to run all out on these new prostheses. It is such a feeling of freedom and an experience I have trouble putting into words,” said Shane. One day, Shane would like to represent the U.S. in international athletic competitions.
